After the captivating images and enchanting music of his road-movie, This Must Be the Place (2011), Sorrentino draws on the tried and true approach of his singular style, once again creating a visually stunning comedic drama about the search for meaning in one’s own life and coming to terms with the unstoppable flow of time and an aging body. Sorrentino set the story of Jep, an aging author and journalist, in the shimmering heights of modern Roman society, and like the great filmmakers Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni, he criticizes present day society in its superficiality, hypocrisy and blindness. A desperate Babylon of wealth, politicians, criminals, film stars, artists, intellectuals and complicated, short-lived relationships comes to life in the ancient buildings and villas of Rome as seen through the eyes of jaded, gin-saturated Jep, spinning in a whirlpool of endless parties under the gaze of the beautiful, yet dead, diva, Rome.
