Dear European cinephiles,

 Welcome to the 25th anniversary edition of the Days of European Film. I am very happy that the European Commission Representation in the Czech Republic is once again a partner to this great festival. As every year, the general public all over the Czech Republic will have a unique opportunity to see interesting films from all over the European cultural space. The stories they tell might seem very distant from our everyday lives at first, but after having watched them, many of us realize that they actually hold a mirror up to us all. 

This only proves that we are all part of a wider community, characterized by richness and diversity of its cultural traditions and by a common cultural heritage. We need to re-discover this heritage so that we can fully understand and appreciate it and protect it for future generations. The “To the Point” section presents films under label „Literature as the main protagonist“, which transfer both bestsellers and less known literary works to the silver screen. This union between the literary tradition and contemporary film, where the past meets the future, reflects the main idea of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH). Many events celebrating our common values will take place during 2018 throughout Europe, including the Czech Republic, as part of the EYCH. 

Europe is a region with 453 World Heritage Sites, which is almost half of the full UNESCO list. The Czech Republic contributes significantly in this respect as well. We can be justly proud of the fact that millions of tourists from all around the world visit our country every year. It is also quite easy for us to travel abroad. Cultural heritage brings people together – be it architecture, literature, fine arts, music, dance, crafts, gastronomy or cinema. It also contributes to greater social cohesion, because it triggers economic growth, new jobs and helps to create contacts between Europe and the rest of the world.
